Communication Manager
Contract Type: Flexible freelance
Remuneration: £30 - £40 per hour depending on experience.
Time: Estimated six months (26 weeks), 10 hours per week (negotiable). Flexible & remote working.
Start Date: July 2023 (depending on candidate availability)

ACAN is a network of individuals within architecture and related built environment professions taking action to address the twin crises of climate and ecological breakdown. We are a community benefit society currently run by volunteers, organised into thematic and international working groups.
Background
ACAN have recently received grant funding from the Laudes Foundation to increase organisational capacity, and further our strategic development along three key themes:
Campaign strategy development (Work package 1)
International Outreach (Work package 2)
Longer term financial sustainability.
Role Description
We are looking for an individual to take a key role in leading ACAN’s communication strategy. Applicants should be able to produce various types of content, coordinate with the working groups and expand ACANs reach. This role requires a high level of organisation, ability to take initiative and great communication skills.
Responsibilities:
Content strategy development and execution in collaboration with the Campaign Strategy leads
Audience engagement and growth, providing regular, relevant content and develop strategies to increase engagement
Campaign optimisation - help develop campaign report and expand campaign reach
Coordinate with working groups to obtain relevant content for campaigns, collaborate with ACAN working groups for social media content and manage communication channels
Develop ACANs existing communities on digital platforms

This role would suit someone with a marketing and/or communications background, who can work flexibly - the role is likely to develop iteratively as ACAN’s needs evolve. We are looking for someone with previous experience producing social media and other digital content, building audiences online or offline and channel-specific knowledge, someone highly creative and process-driven. An individual with contacts within media organisations would be beneficial to grow ACAN’s reach and reputation.
Applicants should be able to work proactively and independently in a start-up environment, be highly organised, confident in communications and reaching out to people, and have clear leadership qualities.
Through this work, you will actively support grassroots campaigning to decarbonise our built environment, and the growth of an international network of climate activist architects.

Role Description
We are looking for an experienced fundraiser to help secure future funding for ACAN, and support our organisation in achieving financial sustainability. This is the first such role at ACAN and the successful applicant will have the opportunity to shape the long-term fundraising strategy of our organisation. The fundraiser will have previous success in securing funding from businesses, trusts, local authorities and other institutions. It will be the fundraiser’s job to communicate ACAN’s mission to external stakeholders and to both establish and maintain positive relationships with donors.
Responsibilities:
Identifying fundraising opportunities, including making connections with grant funding organisations / bodies
Organising and supporting with fundraising activities
Writing grant applications
Planning donation campaigns and events
Writing reports to various funders
Developing new ways of acquiring funding - through events, advertising, campaigning
Delivering presentations
Developing a longer-term fundraising strategy for the organisation

We are looking for someone who is exceptional at strategising and building strong relationships with donors. The role requires excellent communication, account management and development skills. As the role is likely to develop iteratively as ACAN’s needs evolve, we are looking for someone who is resourceful, takes initiative to solve problems, is proactive and thinks creatively.
The fundraiser will work alongside the Campaigns Strategy lead, and will liaise directly with the Steering Group. Through this work, you will actively support grassroots campaigning to decarbonise our built environment, and the growth of an international network of climate activist architects.

PR and Messaging Coordinator

Role Description
We are looking for an individual to take a key role in leading ACAN’s PR and messaging. Applicants should have experience in engaging with all forms of media outlets within and around the built environment industry. They should hold existing links and connections to relevant press and be able to understand and coordinate with ACAN’s working groups to develop and expand ACANs reach. This role requires a high level of organisation, relationship building skills, an ability to take initiative and great communication.
Responsibilities:
Responding to press enquiries, monitoring and archiving ACAN press
Developing and maintaining strategic links with press, relevant to group campaigns, in collaboration with Campaign Strategy leads
Create press contact database
Pitching opinion pieces and comments to press
Writing press releases and editing/refining copy and organisation messaging
Liaising with co-ordinators on press opportunities and upskilling members on engagement
Researching and active pitching to relevant press to communicate ACAN’s presence and ambitions
Working collaboratively with Communications Team as required

This role would suit someone with a background in working as a press officer, PR consultant or media relations, and who can work flexibly. The role is likely to develop iteratively as ACAN’s needs evolve. We are looking for someone with previous experience in working with and around different forms of media related to architecture, construction, design and the built environment industry.
